Twelve lives have been lost today in the fight for the freedom of speech. Fairpress expresses its deepest condolences to families, colleagues and friends of the ones killed in the attack on the Charlie Hebdo newspaper. The murdered were journalists. For the umpteenth time, a brutal force was applied against the letters, drawings, sound recording and video. Against thoughts and words. When we are being killed, beaten, butchered and frightened, it is always in the name of a higher cause. But on our question What higher goal!?, they do not have an answer. Because the answers and information they do not seek.

Today’s truths have been created in radical ideological, religious, political, criminal and financial labs, and an open-minded and critically determined journalist has become the last obstacle to such “truths”. And for that very reason an open-minded journalist becomes the biggest prey and a trophy of ideology. Therefore, they kill us. In order to hang our heads in their command towers and convey a clear message to all those who think, what awaits them if they verbalize their thoughts. And a sad paradox. They are killing us most often so that we speak and write about it more. Because if the message of terror

and fear is not transferred to every man, the act itself makes no sense to the ones who perform such acts.

Not a single journalist who keeps its reputation must remain in the background of these events today. It is the time to send a message that no one, ever, in any way will fail to kill a man’s yearning for knowledge, awareness and understanding of the world around us. And in that, we are the first tool and the first point. We will work our jobs, and point our pens towards those who forcibly destroy everything that makes a man a human being, different from the beasts. Because you can kill a man but you cannot kill the word.

We invite all colleagues, all editorial staff, all news agencies, all bloggers and independent journalists, all citizens present on social networks to join us in the organization of a Day of Silence. Day in which we will reflect on all the colleagues who lost their lives because of the words and images that they disseminated. A day which should clearly depict how our world would look like without newspapers, media and words.
