People could watch the events in the parliament on large-screen screens, and Magyar’s solemn promise was received with enthusiasm. “I want to be there when Orbán ends after sixteen years. One day I will tell my children about it,” student Andrea Kövesová, who came with a group of friends from the city of Győr, told Novinka. “Many of us considered going abroad, but the elections on April 12 changed everything. We are beginning to believe in change for the better again and will stay in Hungary after our studies,” she added.

Mónika and Éva came to Budapest from the countryside
“I’m from Budapest, but I couldn’t miss this. I was in the streets even on election night, when we celebrated everywhere we could that we finally got rid of Orbán,” said János. “I’m afraid that Magyar won’t have it easy, because Orbán left behind a ruin and an empty state coffers, but I’m giving the new government a chance,” he did not hide his enthusiasm.
“I hope that Magyar will succeed in stopping the export of the property of Orbán’s oligarchs, who are already fleeing to countries where they will not extradite them. Let them go, but let them leave the money at home. After all, they stole it from all of our money,” said Éva with the Hungarian flag in her hand.

The mood reached an absolute peak when the new prime minister appeared on the square. This was followed by a parade of the honor guard and the raising of the national flag. After ten years, the flag of the European Union returned to the parliament building. “We finally have a government that will not fight against Brussels. Above all, let Magyar not be friends with the war criminal Putin and settle relations with Ukraine,” András expressed hope.
After the prime minister’s speech, a real disco started on the square in front of the parliament and on the Danube embankment. Budapest was full of joy and hope on this day. However, all Hungarians, led by the new prime minister and his government, are aware in the back of their minds that the country is facing a difficult period.
Magyar: Let’s learn from the mistakes of the past
In his first speech in office, Magyar emphasized that Hungary is in a historical moment. According to the new prime minister, the task of the new government will be to build a more humane society in Hungary. “We will start a revision of the Hungarian constitutional system, strengthen the system of checks and balances and initiate a limit on the number of prime ministerial terms,” Magyar promised.
He also emphasized that the new government will be the government of all Hungarians. “Let’s learn from the mistakes of the past,” urged Magyar, saying that people should openly criticize the government and not allow anyone to abuse their power.
Magyar called on President Tamás Sulyok to resign by the end of May at the latest. In the past, the prime minister described the president as a “puppet in the hands of Orbán’s government”.
