Orbán resigned as chairman of Fidesz, the party did not accept the resignation

According to index.hu, Fidesz MP Erik Bánki said that the aforementioned June congress will decide on all positions in the party. “Yes, Viktor Orbán resigned, but the resignation was not accepted,” Bánki told journalists.

Fidesz suffered a crushing defeat in the April parliamentary elections, and Orbán is ending his tenure as prime minister after sixteen years. On Saturday, Orbán announced that he would not take over his parliamentary mandate and would concentrate on restoring the Fidesz party. It can therefore be expected that Orbán will be reconfirmed as party chairman at the June congress.

The opposition party Tisza won a constitutional majority of 141 seats in the new parliament. The leader of the Tisza party, Péter Magyar, will become the new Hungarian prime minister. The constituent meeting of the parliament will be held on May 9, 2026.
