The acting president of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, has started the consultative meeting with the leaders of the political parties on the issue of the election of the country’s president. Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, Donika Gërvalla, the chairperson of Alternativa, Mimoza Kusari-Lila, as well as representatives of parties from non-majority communities are participating in the meeting held at the Presidency.
However, representatives of the three main opposition parties are absent from the consultations called by Haxhiu. The leaders of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) have refused to participate in the meeting. The meeting takes place within the framework of political consultations for the process of electing the next president of Kosovo, while the absence of the main opposition parties is expected to affect the continuation of the political process.
The head of the AAK Parliamentary Group, Besnik Tahiri, requested a day ago (August 17) that the Vetëvendosje Movement call the constitutive session of the Assembly, stressing that this would pave the way for the formation of institutions and then the election of the president. Tahiri declared that AAK’s votes for the election of the president are “on the table” and requested that the process move forward as soon as possible. He accused the LVV of deliberately delaying the formation of institutions, with the aim of holding new elections at the end of the year.
On the other hand, the deputy of LDK, Avdullah Hoti, stated that his party is ready to contribute to solving the deadlock and finding a candidate for president who would be acceptable to all political forces. Hoti said that the LDK has given up the demand for institutional balance, in order to enable the functioning of the institutions. According to him, first the Assembly should be constituted and the Government should be formed, while then the discussion on the election of the president should be opened.
