The latest European Parliament resolution strongly criticized the polarized political situation in Serbia, the Serbian leadership and the deterioration of democracy after nearly a year of civil protests, but President Aleksandar Vučić still hopes the country will be a member of the EU within the decade.
In an interview for RTS public radio and television, Vucic spoke about “surprises” and how the dialogue with Kosovo can affect all of this.
“I have no illusions about that. I think there will be many surprises, different geopolitical decisions in a year or a year and a half. I think everything will change,Vucic said.
According to the Serbian president, Serbia has the chances to join the European Union before 2030.
“I believe there are such chances. But there is another issue: the issue of Kosovo. I cannot accept Kosovo’s independence and I will not,” said the president.
The last local elections in Kosovo have increased the optimism of the president of the Serbian state for the coming years.
“I congratulated the Serbian List for the impossible result in impossible conditions, when all foreigners were working against them, primarily those from the West, but also the main media in Serbia. These people have endured it all,” emphasized the president.
Vucic said that Serbia remains politically endangered by the geopolitical situation. According to him, the greatest danger would come from a “real war” between Europe and Russia.
“We must avoid participation in any way and must maintain our military neutrality. By all means! We want to avoid any regional conflict by any means. So we are not afraid of anyone. We are strong enough, but I do not want to participate in wars“, the Serbian president emphasized.
Regarding the incident that happened at noon on Wednesday near the Parliament building in Belgrade, where a fire broke out in a camp with tents set up outside the National Assembly, Vučić said that it is completely clear who did it.
“We have been enduring terrible violence for a year. People have been hindered in their movement on the streets of Serbia hundreds of thousands of times. More than 25,000 undeclared criminal and illegal rallies have been held, which, after all, we have even secured and spent huge sums of money on… Last night I walked out of the National Assembly. I turned to the angry and furious people and said, ‘People, please lower the tensions.’ We have to live. These are our brothers and sisters, manipulated into a serious, hybrid war being waged on this country,” said the Serbian president.
