The constitutive session of the Assembly of Kosovo was interrupted after the tensions created in the hall, while the head of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Albin Kurti, asked for additional time to reach a political agreement.
Kurti said that there is currently no agreement between the political entities to overcome the impasse and requested that the deputies be given more time to find a solution.
“Therefore, in order to avoid new elections, I am asking you for additional time“, Kurti declared in the Assembly.
His request was followed by debates and tensions between MPs. The situation escalated in the hall, while the deputy of the Alliance, Time Kadriaj, approached and started throwing eggs at Kurti. After that, the MPs of different political groups stood up and started physical pushing, causing the chairman of the session, Avni Dehari, to interrupt the proceedings.
The constitutive session of the new legislature continues to remain blocked, as the deputies have not yet managed to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speakers of the Assembly.
The political impasse threatens to lead the country to new elections, if an agreement is not reached on the constitution of the Assembly and the functioning of the institutions.
It is now expected to see if the interruption of the session will be followed by an agreement between the political subjects.
