Oil prices are on a swing under the influence of turbulent news about possible peace talks. While prices fell in the morning, on Tuesday evening they shot up sharply.
Before eight o’clock in the evening (CEST), the price of Brent North Sea oil rose by 4.4 percent, and the barrel was sold for approximately 99.70 dollars. American WTI light oil rose by 4.8 percent to about 93.90 dollars per barrel.
The increase in prices was caused by Trump’s statement regarding the possible extension of the ceasefire. “I don’t want to do it,” Trump said, according to CNN, when asked if an extension of the truce was on the cards.
“We don’t have that much time because before the two sides get to the negotiating table – as you know, they just got the green light to proceed, which I knew they were going to do anyway – I don’t think they had a choice. They have to negotiate,” he added literally.
It is not clear how, if at all, the negotiations will take place in Islamabad. It was originally expected that American Vice President JD Vance would attend. But he ended up staying in Washington. It is not clear whether negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are on the way.
Even the Iranian delegation has not yet flown to Pakistan. The spokesman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmáil Baghají, said on Tuesday evening, according to the AP agency, that the final decision regarding participation in the talks has not yet been made. According to him, the fact that the US armed forces detained two Iranian vessels raises the question of whether Washington is serious about negotiations.
Both sides do not yet agree on when the truce should expire. While Trump said that this would happen on Thursday night (exactly one o’clock in the morning), Tehran said on Tuesday that the truce would expire on Wednesday night – exactly 24 hours earlier.
