EU message to Serbia after the elections: Obligations in the dialogue with Kosovo remain in force

The European Union has announced that the results of the parliamentary elections in Serbia do not change the basis of the Dialogue facilitated by the EU with Kosovo, nor the obligations that the parties have undertaken within the process of normalizing relations. In an answer to Radio Television of Kosovo (RTK), the spokesperson of the European Union has emphasized that the dialogue does not depend on particular political leaders and that all previous commitments remain in force.

“EU-facilitated dialogue does not depend on particular political leaders. All existing commitments remain in force, including those stemming from the 2023 Agreement on the Road to Normalization and its Implementation Annex, known as the Ohrid Agreement.”it is said in the response of the EU spokesperson.

As for the new government that is expected to be formed in Serbia after the extraordinary parliamentary elections on October 25, officials in Brussels have shown caution in assessing future political developments. According to the EU, at this stage it is still too early to speculate whether the political changes in Belgrade will affect Serbia’s negotiating position or the progress of the dialogue with Kosovo.

“We expect Serbia to continue to engage constructively, respect its existing commitments and contribute to progress towards normalization”. the spokesperson emphasized.

The European Union has also expressed its willingness to cooperate with the new leadership in Serbia, with the aim of guaranteeing the continuity of the dialogue and maintaining the dynamics of the process of normalization of relations with Kosovo. Meanwhile, the political developments after the October 25 elections are expected to determine the new composition of the institutions in Serbia and their approach to the dialogue process, while Brussels has reiterated that the obligations assumed by the parties remain unchanged.
