Knife attack in front of the Israeli embassy in Belgrade, the perpetrator is killed and the policeman is injured

A person was killed by the police during the night in front of the Israeli embassy in Belgrade, Serbia, after attacking a gendarmerie officer with knives. The Serbian Interior Minister, Ivica Dacic, described the event as a terrorist attack, while the authorities have raised the alarm for terrorist threats to the maximum level.

According to Dacic’s statement, the attacker was a minor, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, but it is suspected that he was from the city of Shabac. He allegedly approached the gendarmerie officer with two knives, shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

The operative reacted by shooting the attacker dead, in what the Ministry of the Interior described as self-defense. However, the policeman was slightly wounded in the face by a stab wound. The incident happened shortly after midnight.

After the attack, the Serbian authorities raised the terrorist threat level to maximum, declaring a “red alert”. According to Minister Dacic, this measure foresees stricter security controls and increasing the presence of law enforcement in sensitive facilities, including critical infrastructure and places where many people gather.
