Forty-one-year-old Isaacman founded the payment processing company Shift4 Payments in his youth. Later, he founded the company Draken International, which operates the largest privately owned squadron of former military aircraft in the world. Trump described him as a successful businessman, philanthropist, pilot and astronaut when he announced his intention to nominate a native of New Jersey to head the space agency on Wednesday.
The government’s space agency, founded in 1958, has more than 18,000 employees, led by a so-called administrator nominated by the president and approved by the US Senate. NASA is currently managed by former senator and astronaut Bill Nelson, appointed by outgoing President Joe Biden.
According to Trump’s statement, Isaacman will be an engine of progress and inspiration. “Jared’s passion for space, experience in spaceflight, and commitment to pushing the boundaries of discovery, unlocking space mysteries, and building a new space economy make him the ideal choice to lead NASA into a great new era,” said the incoming president.
