Translator Alena Morávková has died – Novinky

Until the regime change in 1989, she was forced to work as a freelancer. She first published her translations under a foreign name, later under her own.

After 1989, she was rehabilitated and in the years 1990-94 she worked at the Institute for Czech and World Literature of the CSAV and then at the Slavic Institute of the CSAV, where she worked as a specialist until her retirement.

She continued to be an external pedagogue at the Faculty of Arts of the Charles University and the Theater Faculty of the AMU, and also devoted herself to translations of Russian, Ukrainian and partially French literature and drama. As a member of the Translators’ Community and the PEN Club, she was elected president of the Prague section of the International Society for Science and Art.

Alena Morávková is the author of a number of articles and articles devoted to the issue of translation, especially specific problems of drama translation and translation criticism. She translated 135 titles of Russian literature and drama. Her name is primarily associated with the work of Mikhail Bulgakov.

She translated practically all of his work and published the monograph The Way of the Cross by Mikhail Bulgakov. She also published a number of articles and literary monographs as well as theater works. In 2008, she was appointed professor. In 2021, she received the State Prize for lifetime translation work.
