Predators, including eagles, are returning to Jeseníky

The Jeseníky Mountains have long been known as one of the most important nesting grounds of the peregrine falcon in the Czech Republic. In addition to rare falcons, wood hawks, common grebes, common kestrels and buzzards nest here. Nesting is likely with the forest perch and the forest bee-eater.

“In recent years, visitors to the nature of Jesenice can also rarely see majestic eagles, namely the bald eagle, the golden eagle or the sea eagle. These predators do not yet nest in the territory of the PLA, but we do not rule it out in the future,” says Daniel Křenek from the Nature and Landscape Protection Agency.

Ornithologists were pleasantly surprised by the number of recorded species of predators. Red harrier, brown harrier or marsh harrier also appeared on the list. In the past, they have also encountered rarities here, such as the tundra dormice, the red-footed kestrel, or even the griffon vulture.

“So far, we have provided measures to support the nesting sites of birds of prey only in the case of falcons. If we find the nesting of eagles or other rare species, we are ready to ensure effective protection of these nests in cooperation with the land owners,” explained the head of the Jeseníky Nature Reserve Administration, Vít Slezák.

Birds of prey play an irreplaceable role in nature. “They mostly feed on small rodents, which can cause damage to crops and forests. Predators therefore function as natural biological protection. They liked the Jeseníky Mountains because of the colorful landscape,” said Slezák. “There are well-preserved meadows and pastures or old forests and rocks. Such an environment provides a number of species with suitable conditions for nesting and gathering food,” added Křenek.

This year, falcons hatched 32 chicks in Jeseníky, twenty-two pairs are nesting there
