A driver at the Christmas market in Magdeburg in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt drove into a crowd on Friday evening, killing at least two people and injuring over 60 others. This was announced by the Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff.
Prime Minister Fiala wrote on the X network that his thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims of the tragedy. “I strongly condemn the brutal terrorist attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany,” he added.
The head of Czech diplomacy Lipavský wrote that he was shaken by the tragedy in Magdeburg. “In these difficult moments, my thoughts are with our German friends, relatives of the victims and injured, and rescuers. We are waiting for further news about the investigation of this terrorist act,” said Lipavský.

It is not yet clear whether Czech citizens are among the dead and injured. “We are monitoring the situation in Magdeburg, our consulate general in Dresden is in contact with the police, who will release further information tomorrow (Saturday) according to the investigation, including the identity of the victims and the injured,” said Mariana Wernerová from the ministry’s communications department.
In response to the event in Magdeburg, the Austrian Minister of the Interior assured that there is no immediate risk in the Czech Republic. “The police are monitoring the situation, increased security measures apply during Advent markets in the Czech Republic,” said the minister.
The Czech police stated today that security measures in the country have been set since the beginning of the Advent season. This is mainly about increased service performance in places with a greater concentration of people, such as Christmas markets and other cultural events. He also deploys police officers with long guns and ballistic protection on patrols.
