A statement from record label Conquest Music also reads: “We are proud to have Paul Di’Anno in our artistic family. Raise a glass to his memory.”
The group Iron Maiden also rushed to express their condolences. “We are all deeply saddened to learn of Paul Di’Anno’s passing. His contribution to Iron Maiden was huge and helped guide us on the path we have followed as a band for almost five decades. His pioneering presence as a frontman and vocalist, both on stage and on our first two albums, will be fondly remembered not only by us, but also by fans all over the world,” reads the band’s statement on its Facebook page.
“It’s so sad that he’s gone,” said the group’s bassist Steve Harris. “I was in contact with him recently, we wrote about West Ham and its ups and downs. At least until recently he was still playing. It was something that kept him alive, he was on stage whenever he could. We will all miss him. Rest in peace mate.’
Paul Di’Anno, real name Paul Andrews, was born on May 17, 1958 in London. He became famous as the lead singer of the British band Iron Maiden, with whom he performed between 1978 and 1981. His distinctive voice and rebellious stage presence were an integral part of the band’s early success.
He sang on the first studio albums of Iron Maiden (1980) and Killers (1981). His unique performance, full of aggression, became a defining feature of the nascent sound of the later world-famous and popular group. And thanks to that, it influenced a number of metal bands that came later.
After he left her due to different views on creation and after personal disagreements, he recorded with the bands Battlezone and Killers and released a number of solo albums. He also appeared as a guest in various lineups. Despite serious health problems that forced him to perform in a wheelchair, he continued to perform.
