Macinka and his Serbian counterpart dealt with migration and Belgrade’s entry into the EU

The head of Czech diplomacy highlighted the level of mutual relations. “We have no outstanding questions.” According to Macinka, the Czech Republic is also one of the biggest supporters of Serbia in the European Union.

The ministers also addressed mass migration. “We welcome Serbia’s approach. Mass migration is one of the biggest security risks for the whole of Europe,” said Macinka. “We don’t want to be a parking lot for migrants,” Djurić explained the Serbian position.

The upheaval also included the burning issue of Kosovo, which was a Serbian autonomous province in the past and after the conflict in 1998 and 1999 and the intervention of the North Atlantic Alliance, came under the administration of the United Nations. In 2008, Pristina declared independence, which Serbia does not recognize.

“I understand the arguments that the Serbian side mentions and I understand the historical context of the Kosovo issue,” said Macinka, and in connection with the dispute he mentioned the division of Czechoslovakia in 1993. “The best agreement is the one you conclude yourself. The Czech Republic broke up with Slovakia for good precisely because it did not listen to others,” he declared.

According to Macinka, the recognition of Kosovo’s statehood by the Czech government Mirko Topolánek was approved under duress. In addition, he mentioned the name of the then foreign minister Karl Schwarzenberg and his alleged ties to Madeleine Albright, an American adviser to former President Bill Clinton.

But Macinka refused that the current government had plans to give the issue a “new dynamic”, which could be “theatrical”.

According to Djurić, Serbia will meet the criteria for joining the Union by the end of 2026. However, according to the latest report of the European Commission from November 2025, the Serbian government has not yet demonstrated the real political will to fulfill EU-related priorities and to accelerate preparations accordingly.
