Kosovo towards two pairs of elections – Kurti warns of elections in winter and spring after the failure in the Assembly

The acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has warned that the country may face elections twice within a few months, after failing to secure the necessary votes in the Assembly for the third mandate.

At a press conference in Pristina, Kurti said that even the election of a new president in the spring could lead the country to the ballot boxes again. “Perhaps it is a pity that we can have elections in the winter as well as in the spring,” he said.

President Vjosa Osmani’s mandate ends in April 2026, but according to Kurt, “when we didn’t get 61 votes for the government, it’s hard to get 80 for the president.” Only 56 deputies supported the cabinet proposed by Kurti, while 52 voted against and four abstained. Now, the Constitution gives President Osmani the right to appoint a new representative within ten days.

But the head of PDK, Memli Krasniqi, has rejected the opportunity to take this role, saying that his party will not be part of a mandate that does not have a majority. According to Kurti, after Sunday’s vote “there is no other way but new elections”.

The president is expected to invite the parties for consultations, and if the second attempt to form the government fails, Kosovo will go to elections within 40 days. Political analysts estimate that a new electoral process may bring movement in the results of the parties, but not major changes to avoid coalitions. The prolonged political crisis, which started after the February elections, risks affecting the funds that the EU has provided for the country. From the package of 6 billion euros for the Western Balkans, over 880 million euros belong to Kosovo, but these funds have been blocked due to the lack of new institutions.
