In 2024, the paratroopers received 38 pieces of URO Vamtac all-terrain vehicles, modified for air drops. During an exercise in the Uceda area near Madrid, paratroopers dropped their cars from an Airbus A400M Cargo cargo plane.
However, the parachute mechanisms of one of the cars apparently failed after launch and the Spanish vehicle costing 620 thousand euros (15 million CZK), which with all equipment and fuel can weigh up to 11 tons, fell from a height of 300 meters to the ground.
The damage after such a fall soon proved to be irreparable and the wreckage had to be removed by an army crane, the OkDiario server explained.
Since 2013, the URO Vamtac has been the main vehicle of the Spanish army, which has four thousand of them at its disposal. They serve, for example, as carriers of anti-tank guided missiles, tractors or ambulances.
Spain also exports a lot of them abroad; Portugal and Morocco were among the biggest customers. In April, the Spaniards promised to deliver hundreds of these cars to Ukraine as well, the Ukrinform website recalled.
