In the Vatican, they restored the secret path, the escape route of the popes

The authorities said that the Vatican Corridor, also known as the Passetto di Borgo, will be almost completely accessible to visitors after six months of renovation. The trail became famous as the place where Pope Clement VIII fled from Rome during its sacking in 1527. It was partially made available in three phases, first in 1999, then six years later, and finally in 2013.

Before its opening in 1999, it was the home of vagrants and a trail of thieves, anti-fascists hid here during the Second World War. Restorers even discovered their inscriptions on the walls. From now on, even tourists will be able to follow in the footsteps of real and fictional characters and at the same time get a glimpse into one of the most authentic medieval districts of Rome. However, visits are only possible in small groups and after prior reservation.

The elevated path, 700 meters long and built in 1277 by Pope Nicholas III, leads from the Vatican palaces through the medieval Borgo Pio alley in the lee of St. Peter’s Basilica to the Angel Castle on the banks of the Tiber, once the safest fortress of the popes. The fortress, built on the tomb of the Roman emperor Hadrian, is one of the main tourist attractions in Rome.
