Floods caused by typhoon Yagi claimed at least 226 lives in Burma

Among the areas most affected by the floods is Mandalay, the country’s second largest city, the capital of Neipyijto and parts of the Shan State, where fierce fighting has continued in recent months. “A total of 388 support camps have been opened in nine regions and states, and benefactors have donated drinking water, food and clothing,” the military-run newspaper Global New Light of Myanmar wrote.

According to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, 40,000 hectares of agricultural land are under water in the Mandalay area alone, and approximately 26,700 houses have been destroyed. In addition to the 226 dead, another 77 people are missing across Burma, reports Reuters.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) also drew attention to the fact that it is difficult to establish contact with flood-affected areas. It was not only the roads that were damaged, but also telecommunications and electrical lines. “The affected areas include camps for people displaced by the war, including children, who have already faced limited services due to the ongoing conflict,” UNICEF said in a statement.

Another approximately 292 victims were claimed by Typhoon Yagi, this year’s strongest Asian storm, in Vietnam and at least 45 in Thailand. Three victims were also recorded in Laos.
