During the phone call, Fico told Zelensky that Slovakia supports Ukraine’s entry into the European Union and that Bratislava is ready to share its experience with joining the bloc.
“I invited the prime minister to visit Kyiv and thanked him for the invitation to Bratislava. We also discussed the possibility of a personal meeting in the near future. Our teams will work on planning it,” the Ukrainian president’s post reads.
“We need to have strong relations between our states and we are both interested in that,” he added.
The Slovak Prime Minister then stated on Facebook that “despite the fact that we have different opinions on some topics, we have a common interest in good and friendly relations between Slovakia and Ukraine”.
Fico further stated that he and Zelensky agreed on a joint meeting on Monday in Yerevan, Armenia, where the Ukrainian president is also to meet Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO). “At the same time, we will visit each other in the capitals of our countries,” added Fico, adding that, according to him, no peace agreement is possible in the conflict with Russia without the consent of the Ukrainian side.
Andrej Babiš told the server iDnes about the meeting with Zelensky in Yerevan. However, he did not say what they will talk about. He denied that he would go to Kiev to see the Ukrainian president.
Fico has not been in Kiev since the beginning of the full-scale Russian war. It appeared only in Užhorod, which is located only a few kilometers from the Slovak border. Zelenskyj has already invited Fica several times.
The phone call between Fico and Zelensky took place just a few days before Fico left for Moscow. There he will participate in the Victory Day celebrations in the Great Patriotic War. However, it is not clear how he will get there. The entire Baltic region and Poland will not allow him to fly over their airspace in a government special aircraft. The Czech Republic, on the other hand, allowed Fico to do so, the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Novinka on Friday.
