In addition to Spain, Trump also threatened Italy and Germany this week, from which, according to Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, Washington really wants to withdraw five thousand soldiers. Trump blames them for the approach to the American-Israeli war against Iran and insufficient investment in defense.
Robles first stated that Trump’s statements were “out of place and, of course, have no legal basis”, so she asked him to show “great respect” to Spain. According to her, she told him “respectfully, but quite emphatically” with the fact that these statements are “completely unnecessary”.
“We do not accept any instruction and are completely calm, because we are among the countries that most fulfill their obligations to NATO,” the server quotes Robles as saying.
The minister further stated that the Spanish government “is very firm, it knows what it is doing, it is committed to peace, respect for international law, the North Atlantic Alliance and peace missions in the world”.
Regarding the reluctance to join the American-Israeli war against Iran, she stated that “Spain cannot be asked to help in an illegal war that does not have international support.”
She also reminded that over four thousand Spanish soldiers participate in international missions. They are deployed, for example, in Slovakia, Romania, Latvia and also as part of the aerial police mission in the Baltics.
Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius commented on the announced withdrawal of American soldiers. He declared that their presence in Germany is in both German and American interest. “We work closely with the Americans for the benefit of peace and security in Europe, for the benefit of Ukraine and deterrence,” he said.
