Deadlock for the election of the new president of Kosovo, the parties still without consensus. The session is postponed, the opposition is absent from the Assembly

The Assembly of Kosovo is expected to meet at 14:00 for the election of the new president. The postponement of the session came after the opposition MPs were not in the hall.

Speaker Albulena Haxhiu calling for their presence said that the actions of the opposition, by boycotting the session for the election of the president, are against the constitutional principles.

“To give them the opportunity to be present at this session we are continuing this session at 2 o’clock. So see you at 2 o’clock”

If the new president of Kosovo is not elected by midnight today, the country will go to early elections within 45 days.

64 deputies participated in the vote the day before. Feride Rushiti received 63 votes, while one vote was declared invalid. The other candidate, Hatixe Hoxha, did not secure any votes. The opposition did not participate in the process, calling it unconstitutional.

The head of the Vetëvendosje Parliamentary Group, Arbërie Nagavci, said that the nominations were made to avoid new elections and that the session had a quorum to start. Meanwhile, the chairman of the PDK, Bedri Hamza, called the developments a “constitutional coup”, insisting that the Constitution requires the presence of 80 deputies for voting.

The chairman of the LDK, Lumir Abdixhiku, described the night as “heavy for democracy”, stressing that the president must be elected through a political agreement. The head of the AAK parliamentary group, Besnik Tahiri, called the session “an attack on the Constitution” and “an attempt at a coup d’état”.

A day ago, the head of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku, revealed the list of 15 deputies’ votes for, as he said, the candidate for president proposed by the LDK, not excluding the possibility that the votes would go to Vjosa Osmani.
