“Within the smallness that Slovakia represents in the European Union, I will support this agreement. It is bombastic material, bombastic,” he said, adding that the US wants to return Russia to the ranks of the great powers. “If this agreement is signed, Russia will come out of it as a total winner,” he noted, adding that it would be strengthened “morally and economically.”
At Friday’s press conference, he also stated that the current proposal is worse for Ukraine than the plan discussed in 2022, yet he sees in it a chance for an immediate ceasefire on both sides of the front.
At the same time, the prime minister sharply criticized the European Union for the financial aid to Ukraine to date and for the intention to use frozen Russian assets to further support the war-stricken country. He also accused her that her foreign policy is zero.
“The foreign policy of the European Union is zero and it seems that even the big players have little respect for the European Union,” said Fico, referring to Trump’s proposal where the EU should invest 100 billion for the reconstruction of Ukraine. “Without asking her,” he added.
The Slovak Prime Minister also commented on the words of the State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense Igor Melicher, who said in a TV Markíza debate that it would be best for Slovakia if Ukraine were under the influence of Russia and within the borders of 2014. Melicher justified this by the fact that we would have access to cheap energy and obtain transit fees. “I have to reprimand him because he was softer than this peace plan,” said Robert Fico.
The American administration came up with a new proposal to end the war in Ukraine. The plan, which was approved by President Donald Trump, assumes that Ukraine should recognize Russian control over Crimea and Donbass, reduce its own army and renounce NATO membership. In exchange, she would receive security guarantees and part of the money for the reconstruction of the country. Western allies criticize the plan and call it capitulation.
The new American peace proposal has 28 points, and its preparation took place in secret between American and Russian negotiators, as reported by NBC station and Axios server sources. Ukraine was not directly involved in the process, it was only informed about key points.

According to the proposal, Kyiv should give up not only Crimea, but also the entire Donetsk and Luhansk regions and those parts of the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions that are now occupied by Russia. In addition, the plan proposes reducing the number of soldiers of the Ukrainian army to approximately 400,000 and permanently renouncing NATO membership or stationing allied troops on its territory.
In return, the United States promises Ukraine security guarantees to ensure a “decisive coordinated military response by the West” in the event of a new aggression, and the use of some frozen Russian assets to rebuild the country. The Peace Council headed by President Trump should decide on the implementation of the agreement.
