AT A GLANCE: New German plan to meet climate goals

Germany wants to meet its climate goals, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 65 percent compared to 1990, by 2030. However, experts warn that despite all measures, the goals will not be met.

More wind, less gas

By 2030, another 2,000 wind power plants with a capacity of 12 gigawatts should be built, which is the capacity of 15 to 20 gas power plants. The government expects that the consumption of natural gas and coal could be significantly reduced in 2030, thereby saving 6.5 million tons of CO2.

Electrification instead of gas

For industry, the German government plans to financially support the transition to electricity and heat pumps.

Electric cars and charging networks

The transport sector is considered one of the biggest problems of German climate protection. The cabinet of Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) wants to support the sale of 800,000 electric cars to private individuals and the construction of charging stations through subsidies for which three billion euros should be allocated. An amount of 500 million euros is expected for their expansion.

District heating networks

The government plans to expand heating networks and increase the share of renewable energy sources and waste heat.

Agriculture

The Cabinet wants to expand mixed forests at the expense of monocultures, because they are more resistant to climate change. With the new subsidy program, the cabinet wants to support the transition of agricultural machines from diesel to electric drives. The new subsidy program is intended to support a special form of agriculture on bogs.
