A South Korean court approved the issuance of an arrest warrant for President Jun Sok-jol

Jun became the first sitting president in the history of South Korea to be taken into custody.

On Wednesday, the investigators of the Office for the Investigation of Corruption in the Ranks of Leading Representatives (CIO) detained Jun and took him to their headquarters, where they wanted to question him in connection with the state of emergency.

However, Jun refused to cooperate because, according to him, the CIO did not have the authority to arrest the president. Jun could spend a maximum of 48 hours in custody, so on Friday the investigators requested another arrest warrant allowing for the extension of the detention to up to 20 days.

It’s all my fault. The Korean minister regrets the declaration of martial law by the president

The world

The political crisis in South Korea broke out last year on December 3, when President Jun declared martial law due to the opposition’s alleged sympathies towards North Korea and the alleged anti-state activities of opposition leaders. However, only a few hours after the announcement of martial law, the parliament opposed the president’s move and the government finally canceled the exceptional regime.

The opposition-controlled parliament stripped Jun of his presidential powers on December 14 and wants to recall him, a move that must be approved by the nine-member constitutional court. He has 180 days to do it. The acting head of state is currently the Minister of Finance Che Sang-mok, who also holds the position of Prime Minister.
