“Total and complete victory. One hundred percent. There’s no doubt about it,” Trump told AFP in a brief telephone interview shortly after announcing the ceasefire on Wednesday night. According to him, Iran’s enriched uranium will be “perfectly taken care of, otherwise I wouldn’t do it”, he added.
“Iran wants it to happen, they’ve had enough! So does everyone else!” wrote Trump on Truth Social. He previously stated that he is ready to conclude a truce with Iran if Tehran opens the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, Iran proposed a “functional” ten-point plan that could help end the war definitively.
The list of ten points published by the Iranian state media contains a number of conditions that the United States has rejected in the past, the British newspaper The Guardian points out. The plan requires:
– lifting of all primary and secondary sanctions against Iran, – maintaining Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz, – withdrawing American troops from the Middle East, – ending attacks on Iran and its allies, – releasing frozen Iranian assets, – adopting a UN Security Council resolution that would make any agreement binding.
In the version published in Persian, Iran also included the wording “consent to enrichment” in connection with its nuclear program. This wording was missing from the English versions that Iranian diplomats provided to journalists.
Trump: Big money is made
“We have a lot of positive steps ahead! Big money to be made. Iran can start the reconstruction process,” added Trump. As part of the ceasefire, Iran agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but at the same time specified that all traffic must be coordinated with Tehran — a departure from the pre-war situation.
According to Trump, it was China who helped bring Iran to the negotiating table to agree to a two-week ceasefire. The American president is scheduled to travel to Beijing in May, where he will meet his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.
The fate of Iran’s enriched uranium is a key element of the war that the US and Israel launched on February 28 with the declared goal of depriving Iran of the possibility of obtaining a nuclear weapon. On Tuesday, Trump threatened to destroy “an entire civilization” if Iran does not accede to the deal.
According to AP, the truce was in doubt after Iran published different versions of this plan, which is supposed to serve as a basis for negotiations. The Persian version contains the wording “consent to enrichment” in connection with Iran’s nuclear program. However, for still unclear reasons, this wording is missing from the English version that Iranian diplomats provided to journalists.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakci said that navigation through the Strait of Hormuz will be allowed in the next two weeks under the supervision of the Iranian army. According to the AP agency, it is not clear from the statement whether Iran really intends to allow free navigation in this key waterway for the export of oil and natural gas from the Persian Gulf.
The plan, according to the AP agency, which refers to an unnamed regional representative, assumes that Iran and Oman will collect fees from ships passing through the strait. This official said that Iran would use the money obtained for reconstruction.
