“This is a decision of the head of the Russian state and it will be implemented,” TASS quotes Peskov. “But of course, everyone would expect some kind of response from the Kyiv regime in the form of adequate intentions. So far, this is not the case,” he added.
Celebrations of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War will be held in Russia on May 9. Russia suggested that a truce should take place on this day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi let it be known that he would discuss the whole matter with US President Donald Trump, who had a phone call with Putin on Wednesday.
“We will find out what exactly it is about: whether it is a few hours of security for the parade in Moscow, or a little more. Our proposal is: a long-term ceasefire, guaranteeing reliable security for people and lasting peace. Ukraine is ready to work on this in any dignified and effective format,” the Ukrainian president wrote on Telegram.
Russia declared a truce last year as well, when it lasted three days during the May celebrations, from May 8 to 11. Even then, Moscow did not agree anything with Ukraine. The Russians, who declared it themselves, violated this truce countless times.
Ukraine has proposed a long-term ceasefire many times, but Russia has always rejected it. This happened for the first time last March, when Ukraine agreed to the American plan for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire. Kyiv repeated this proposal several times, but Russia never agreed. According to Russia, a cease-fire is not a solution, therefore Moscow only wants “permanent peace”.
