The United States needs a partner in Kosovo who understands the need to avoid destabilizing actions, advancing regional stability and protecting the rights of all Kosovo citizens, said a US Embassy spokesman in Pristina.
The spokesman told Radio Free Europe on Monday, a few days after the US suspended the planned strategic dialogue with Kosovo indefinitely due to concerns about government-run government actions led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
He said he was charged with the US Embassy, Anu Prattipati, holds regular meetings with Kurti and that “we have directly expressed our concerns to the Prime Minister in these meetings, and made the position of the United States government completely clear.”
The US Embassy has not explained what the Prime Minister’s actions were in office Kurti who led to her decision to suspend the planned strategic dialogue.
On Monday, the spokesman stressed that the US will continue to appreciate the government’s actions in office ”, not wanting to give more detail.
He assured that the US will always remain a close friend of the people of Kosovo and is fully committed to partnership with Kosovo, but said he asks partners to work constructively to ensure stability and security.
“We want to move forward with the government in office, but we need a partner who understands the necessity to avoid destabilizing actions and is committed to advancing regional stability and protecting the rights of all citizens of Kosovo,” the spokesman said.
Last week, the in-office government dismissed the US criticism that led to the suspension of the planned strategic dialogue, saying that “our actions, lawful and constitutional, at all times have been in the service of eliminating destability to guarantee sustainable and long-term stability.”
Whereas, the country’s president, Vjosa Osmani-who had announced earlier this year that Kosovo would finalize an agreement reached with the US on this dialogue-expressed regret and concern for the US decision.
Strategic dialogue is a process that the US State Department in most cases develops with different countries around the world with the aim of advancing bilateral relations.
This process includes high -level discussions between the two countries taking place either in Washington, or in the respective country, on a wide range of topics such as protection, security, environment, energy, economic cooperation, etc.
While the US has not indicated which Kurti’s actions are unhappy in recent days, Kurti-who is at the same time leader of the Self-Determination Movement-and other party officials, including Vice President Glauk Konjufca, have criticized the Constitutional Court for bias, saying it is close to the Albanian parties that were in opposition.
The Constitutional Court imposed a temporary measure by which it prohibited the elected deputies of the Assembly from taking action until September 30, and prohibited the conduct of any procedure for the formation of the new government.
The court imposed this measure ex officio and on the basis of the Serbian List MPs’ request.
The constitution and the international community have condemned the pressure of Kurti and his party to the country’s highest court.
