Trump did so a few hours after Matt Gaetz, a former Republican congressman and another of Trump’s loyalists, gave up his candidacy for this post. He made his decision after meetings with members of the Senate, which approves the appointment of the government and where Gaetz’s surprising nomination did not have certain support. Gaetz previously faced an investigation in Congress regarding suspicions of sexual misconduct or the use of prohibited drugs.
Bondi served as the Minister of Justice of the third most populous American state from 2011 to 2019. During Trump’s first term, she was a member of his commission against opiate and drug abuse. She was also on the team of lawyers who represented Trump in his first impeachment trial in early 2020. She was also among the group of Republicans who came to support Trump this year in a criminal trial in New York for falsifying financial records over payments to a porn actress for confidentiality, in which he was In May, Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts of the indictment.
Trump announced his choice of Bondi on a social network, where he praised her for her experience in the field and said that as the first woman to head the Florida Department of Justice, she fought hard against crime.
“For too long, the partisan Justice Department has been used as a weapon against me and other Republicans – it’s over,” Trump wrote in the post. “Pam will return the Justice Department to its true purpose, which is to fight crime and make America safe again,” Trump added in a variation on his campaign slogan.
Reuters noted that Bondi’s resume, however, differs greatly from that of Gaetz, who had little of the traditional experience expected of a justice minister. Bondiová could thus face less anger from the senators who will approve her nomination.
