“To live free in the free world” – Former president Hashim Thaçi speaks from The Hague about his life, the message he has for the opposition and his attitude towards a possible visit by Albin Kurti

In an exclusive written interview for the Debate Plus show on RTV Dukagjini, the former president of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, called for a broad political agreement between the position and the opposition.

This is his last interview before the announcement of the verdict in the Specialized Chambers of Kosovo in The Hague, which is expected on September 16, at 10:00.

What did you miss the most? Thaçi: To live free in the free world

The former president of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, spoke about his relationship with his family, the inability to attend his father’s funeral and his political future, in an exclusive interview for Debat Plus.

Speaking about his family, Thaçi said that his stay in The Hague is a sacrifice for his wife and son.
“It is not an easy sacrifice for them as well. But this too shall pass. Lumja and Endriti have not missed a single scheduled visit for six years now. The same is the case with the wider family circle”, declared Thaçi.

He said that earlier his parents also visited him, but his mother’s health condition has already made the trip impossible.
Thaçi was also asked about the moment when he could not be present at his father’s funeral.
As if I hadn’t kept my word, as if I had abandoned him”Thaçi said about that moment.

Asked about his political future, the former president did not give an answer that connects him to any specific subject or function.
“I will not put my life and soul into narrow ideological, party, geographical or administrative frameworks”, he declared.
In the end, Thaçi was asked what he missed the most during his stay in The Hague.

His answer was short. “To live free in the free world.”

Thaçi ordered from The Hague: The powers and the opposition at a table, to reach an agreement on strategic issues
The former president of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, has called for a broad political agreement between the position and the opposition in Kosovo.
In his interview, Thaçi mentioned national security, democratic reforms, electoral reform, foreign policy, international agreements and investments in defense as priorities. He added that the integration in NATO and the EU, the special relations with the USA and Albania, as well as the dialogue with Serbia, should be part of the joint commitments.

“I think that Kosovar politics, position and opposition, should sit at a table, discuss and agree on some common commitments: national security, democratic reforms, electoral reform (election of the president directly by the people, as an opportunity to avoid institutional crises), foreign policy, international agreements, investments in defense, integration in NATO and the EU, special relations with the USA, then with Albania and eventually dialogue with Serbia, etc.”

According to Kosovapressthis call comes at a time when Kosovo is in an institutional impasse, with difficulties for the functioning of the institutions after the last elections, while the country continues to face the political crisis related to the election of the president.

The Thaçi-Kurtin report. Would he wait for him if he visited him in The Hague?

Thaçi has avoided comments on Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s approach to him and other former leaders of the KLA: “I do not declare for hypothetical situations.”

Asked about the fact that Kurti has not visited any of them in The Hague, he said: “I don’t want to deal with the moods or behavior of others.”

Even for the approach of the Government of Kosovo to the Specialized Chambers, Thaçi has refused to comment: “I have no comment.”

In the courtroom, he noted the presence of many people, including the former Speaker of the Assembly, Glauk Konjufca, “There were many people in the gallery. I was paying attention to the family members who were sitting in a more visible space. I greeted everyone from a distance.”
