Until now, Bashir managed the administration of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in the province of Idlib, where the group took refuge with its allies and from where roughly two weeks ago it launched an offensive that led to the overthrow of the regime of President Bashar Assad at the weekend.
Assad’s regime was overthrown after a lightning offensive by various rebel groups led by HTS under the leadership of Abu Muhammad Džulání. The HTS group originally emerged from the Syrian branch of the al-Qaeda terrorist network, but in recent days, Julani has been trying to reassure religious minorities in Syria that he wants everyone to live together peacefully.
Bashir was born in 1983 in Idlib, according to the Al-Jazeera news website. In January of this year, he was appointed head of the so-called Syrian Government of Salvation in Idlib. Before that, he was the Minister for Development and Humanitarian Affairs of the local administration between 2022 and 2023. In the past, he worked for the Syrian gas company, holds an engineering degree and also a degree in the field of Islamic law.
The Times of Israel (ToI) server, citing reports in other media, said that Bashir apparently held talks on Monday with current Prime Minister Muhammad Ghazi Jalal, who said on Sunday that he would “cooperate with any leadership chosen by the Syrian people.”
