The south of Italy was hit by a strong storm, in Apulia it has two victims

The weather in Italy is influenced by a large depression centered over the Tyrrhenian Sea, which brings windy and rainy conditions to the Mediterranean.

On its front side, a hot and very dry wind from the south flows over Italy, referred to as scirocco (from Arabic “southeast wind”). It also brings with it a large amount of Saharan dust, which these days reaches all the way to Central Europe.

Wind gusts can reach the force of a gale or even a hurricane at speeds of around 100 km/h. On Monday, a very strong wind hit the south of Italy, most notably the southeastern region of Apulia, where it caused the greatest damage.

According to the agency ANSA, strong gusts claimed the lives of two people. A thirty-eight-year-old worker died in Taranto when a public lighting pole fell on him. In Bisceglie, north of Bari, a twelve-year-old girl died after a tree fell. Injuries were reported from other places in the region.

According to ČTK, traffic was also significantly disrupted. Obstacles on the tracks limited the operation of trains and several flights were canceled at the international airport in Bari. Local authorities also closed some public spaces, for example city parks or cemeteries.

Unfavorable weather will continue on Tuesday. For the regions of Lazio, Piedmont, Tuscany and Umbria, a second-level warning applies, and for other areas, a first-level warning for intense rain. In addition, the ESTOFEX organization warns of the risk of strong storms with hail.

Heavy precipitation may occur in places in the middle, but their intensity will gradually weaken as the pressure moves further south.
