The Kirišiněfteorgsintez refinery, owned by Surgutněftěgaz, is located in the Russian city of Kiriši. For example, the Russian exile newspaper The Moscow Times reported on Tuesday’s attack, according to which this refinery processes about 18 million tons of oil annually, which represents about seven percent of all Russian production.
The Reuters agency, citing sources, said that during the attack, Ukrainian drones damaged three of the four distillation units. “Oil distillation units are a basic element of every refinery and without them the refinery cannot function,” she stated.
Through this refinery, the Russians export fuel towards the Baltic Sea, oil products flow from it to the ports of Ust-Luga and Primorsk. Even these ports are frequent targets of Ukrainian attacks.
The refineries are located about 800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Kyiv repeatedly attacks it, the last time this happened at the end of March.
