The Kurti-Abdixhiku meeting fails, there is no agreement for the president of Kosovo. LDK: Let’s get ready for new elections

After the meeting between the Prime Minister Albin Kurti, leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, and the chairman of the LDK, Lumir Abdixhiku, no agreement was reached on the issue of the president, increasing the likelihood of new elections.

Kurti said that during the negotiations, he first offered the LDK co-governance with the post of deputy prime minister and four ministers, and then also the opportunity for the LDK to lead the Assembly of Kosovo. According to him, these proposals were rejected by the opposition, blocking the reaching of a political agreement.

Kurti added that the lack of cooperation is pushing the country towards new elections, which, according to him, could be avoided with political agreements.

“When our offer for co-governance was rejected for the LDK to have the deputy prime minister and four ministers under the explanation that the LVV should not have all three high state positions, then we made another offer to the LDK, and this is for the position of the Speaker of the Assembly and the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly to undergo a rotation, so that either the vice-president of the LDK or someone else for whom the LDK is determined will occupy the position of the chairman of the the Assembly, while the current Speaker of the Assembly and acting President would become the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, where the position of the LDK is now. In this way, we would have the government even further, we would not have the unnecessary elections”, said Kurti.

On the other hand, Lumir Abdixiku stated that there will be no more meetings with Vetëvendosje on this issue, considering the process ended without result. He said that LDK does not accept that the president is a continuation of the government and that such an agreement would violate the institutional balance.

“I tried and tried, but I didn’t reach an agreement,” said Abdixiku, warning that his party will return to preparations for new elections and internal political organization.

“We agreed not to meet again, and we don’t have to meet because we wasted 53 days, we had no choice, yet to meet once again to talk about the president of the LVV, it makes no sense. Once again I am effectively saying that the LDK considers this issue closed. I tried, I tried, unfortunately I did not succeed. Now we return to the LDK and we will return to the great mission of uniting the right. We must we are getting ready for the scenario of new and extraordinary elections. It has been clear from the beginning that the president should not be an extension of the government, there cannot be a government that also has the president of a party, that is, it has three institutions”, said Abdixiku.
