The Government of Kosovo approves ceiling prices – Kurti: The law will protect the freedom of the market from abuses

While the government cabinet approved the draft law on ceiling prices known as the draft law on temporary measures of basic products in special cases of market destabilization and passed it to the Assembly for approval, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that legislation will protect the freedom of the market from abuses with price increases

“It comes as a necessary response since our citizens are facing price increases, they have experienced: sudden price increases, uncertainty in the market and lack of mechanisms for protection. We are protecting the freedom of the market from abuse”, said Kurti.

After the approval of the draft law in the government, the Minister of Trade Mimoza Kusari Lila gave details of how the draft law will be implemented in practice. She explained that the board established by the Assembly will determine the exact list of products that will be subject to price surveillance.

“The board established by the Assembly will correctly determine a list of products for price supervision, on which it will not be possible to trade”, said Kusari.

Therefore, the law on ceiling prices was returned to the cabinet, after the Constitutional Court of Kosovo overturned it during the previous government mandate. It comes at a time when the large increase in fuel prices in the country has fueled fears of chain price increases, especially those of the basic basket. After the launch of attacks by the USA and Israel against Iran, during March, the price of one liter of diesel at gas stations in Kosovo reached almost 2 euros.
