According to three different sources and ship movement data, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) transported six million barrels of oil through the Strait of Hormuz in April. These were then loaded onto other vessels, which transported them to a warehouse in Oman and refineries in South Korea and Malaysia. Since the ships were sailing without the locator on, the exact amount of transported oil cannot be verified, reports Reuters.
By blocking the Strait of Hormuz, Iran disabled a fifth of the world’s oil and gas export capacity. ADNOC, which before the start of the war exported 3.1 million barrels of oil per day, had to reduce exports by approximately one million barrels per day. Paradoxically, by sending tankers with their locator off through the blockade, the UAE used the same tactics that Iranian tankers have been using to circumvent American sanctions for years.
In addition to the UAE, the blockade also significantly affected exports from Iraq, Kuwait and Qatar. These countries have either suspended the sale of oil or significantly reduced prices to attract buyers. Due to the blockade, Saudi Arabia now transports oil only through the Red Sea.
