The Assembly of Kosovo has postponed the process of electing the new president to 11:00 p.m. The extraordinary session that was expected to start at around 19:00 has been postponed until later.
The Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, addressed the deputies that she is obliged to interrupt this session here and called on them to come back to the plenary session at 11:00 p.m.
“I apologize for this, but I am trying my best to find space even within these hours to give the country a president with a 5-year term“, she said.
According to her, for the session at 23:00, the aim is to ensure the participation of deputies to complete the necessary quorum and to avoid an institutional crisis, since the constitutional deadline for the election of the president expires on April 28, 2026.
Earlier, Haxhiu said that the opposition MPs are calling on the two presidential candidates, Feride Rushiti and Hatixe Hoxha, to withdraw from the race.
“Instead of withdrawing from the statements that put pressure on the candidates to withdraw from the race, which is in full accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo, I invite them to come. And if they ask for a word, we will give them a word. But, not to speak from their offices or from other premises for how long this session is taking place. This is where we argue both legally and politically“, she said.
The procedure for electing the president requires a high quorum (at least 80 deputies in the first round, and then 2/3 of the votes), so broad participation is essential to avoid institutional deadlock.
