Belgian Justice Minister Annelies Verlinden and Minister of Asylum, Migration and Social Integration, Anneleen Van Bossuyt, met with President Vjosa Osmani during his visit to Pristina.
According to Belgian media, their visit is aimed at addressing the overcrowding of prisons and the fight against organized crime.
It is reported that to facilitate prison overcrowding, the Belgian government is considering the possibility of renting or building a prison abroad for convicts who are not resident in Belgium. The visit also includes discussions on a letter of purpose for sharing assets with criminal resources, which would allow some of the seized income as a result of Belgium -led investigations to return to the Belgian treasure.
The two Belgian ministers at the center of the discussion also have a bilateral treaty with Kosovo for mutual legal assistance, with the aim of strengthening long -term judicial cooperation.
Belgian Minister Verlinden said earlier that Kosovo is increasingly appearing in Belgian criminal files as a center for money laundering, human trafficking and weapons smuggling.
“The Western Balkans is now a key region in our fight against organized crime,“She said.
Kosovo has already signed an agreement on the use of prison in Gjilan with Denmark.
