The Swiss-Italian border will change in the area of the Plateau Rosa glacier, in the refuge Rifugio Jean-Antoine Carrel and at the summit of Gobba di Rollin. All these places are located near the Matterhorn mountain and popular ski resorts in the Alps, including the Swiss village of Zermatt, writes the BBC.
The exact changes are not yet known. Both countries will publish them only when the agreement is finally signed. However, Switzerland said on Friday that the newly defined borders were established in accordance with the economic interests of both parties. According to the BBC, it will also determine which country will be responsible for the maintenance of specific protected areas.
Glaciers lost four percent last year
The borders will change due to the melting of the glaciers, which is caused by climate change. The annual report of the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network (Glamos) stated that Swiss glaciers lost four percent of their volume in 2023, the second-highest decline in history after a record six percent melt in 2022.
According to a Glamos warning last year, some Swiss glaciers are shrinking so fast that they are unlikely to be saved, even if global temperatures are held to the 1.5 degree Celsius target of the Paris climate agreement. According to experts, some glaciers could disappear completely within one generation, reported British television.
