Spiropali in support of the student protest in Skopje: the Albanian language is a fundamental right, not a topic of discussion

The former Foreign Minister and deputy of the Socialist Party, Elisa Spiropali, has come out in support of the student protest in North Macedonia for the Albanian language.

Through a post on Facebook, Spiropali emphasizes that protesting today about the Albanian language is not only an alarm, but a signal that, according to her, something essential is still not working properly.

She says that the Albanian language is not a matter of discussion or interpretation, but is a fundamental right.

“A thin line separates dignity from silence. That’s how it used to be. Protesting today about the Albanian language is not just an alarm. It’s a signal that something essential is still not working properly.

When a right that is provided for in the Constitution and the law is demanded on the street, then there is a need for more attention and reflection on its implementation in practice. Because rights should not remain only on paper; they must be lived on a daily basis.

The Albanian language is not a matter of discussion. It is not a compromise. It is not a subject for ambiguous institutional interpretation. It is a fundamental right”, the post of the former foreign minister says.

According to her, today’s student protest is more than a reaction, it is a clear call to strengthen standards and guarantee basic rights.

“A state that guarantees language strengthens equality. And a state that strengthens equality builds trust and stability for all its citizens.

Support for students who are defending not only the language, but also the dignity and principles on which a just society should function. This is not only an issue of Albanians. This is an important test for everyone, about how the state works in practice, not just in principle.

Especially for two friendly countries, which share the same horizon and the same European aspiration, respecting rights and strengthening equality is not only an obligation, but also a common direction”, the socialist MP concludes her post.
