Reuters: Greek National Defense General Staff targeted by pro-Russian hackers

The General Staff of the Hellenic National Defense has been targeted by hackers linked to Russia, according to a report published by Reuters.

The report shows that the data was inadvertently exposed online by the hackers themselves and was discovered by Ctrl-Alt-Intel, a group of British and American researchers that monitor cyber threats.

Hackers have accessed more than 170 email accounts belonging to prosecutors and investigators in Ukraine in recent months, according to the revelations, but their targets have included both friends and opponents of the Kremlin.

Ctrl-Alt-Intel reported that the data left on the server included logs of successful hacking operations and thousands of stolen emails, indicating that the perpetrators accessed at least 284 mailboxes between September 2024 and March 2026.

Among these, 27 incoming emails belonged to the General Staff of the National Defense of Greece, the neighboring country’s highest military body.

Among the compromised addresses were those of the Greek defense attachés in India and Bosnia, as well as the public email box of the Mental Health Center of the Greek Armed Forces.

Researcher Matthew Pfau from cybersecurity firm ESET described the breach as part of a “small cluster of activities across the entire Russian-linked espionage ecosystem.”
