Hong Kong, which currently has around 7.5 million people, is struggling with the housing crisis and high rents, just like many other big cities. Landlords solve the situation by dividing apartments into smaller units, so-called nano-apartments. They can be the size of one classic room, but sometimes they are smaller, so they resemble a cage, which can hardly fit one person lying down. According to the South China Post, over 220,000 people live in such apartments. The city, which is an independent administrative region belonging to the People’s Republic of China, has promised to get rid of all these divided apartments, but has planned to do so until 2049. Quick relief for residents, who wait an average of six years for social housing, is thus expected can’t.
