North Macedonia votes tomorrow, 1.8 million citizens elect mayors and municipal councils, unclear race in Albanian municipalities

Tomorrow, on October 19, 2025, North Macedonia will hold the eighth local elections since independence. Citizens will vote in all 80 municipalities of the country and in the City of Skopje to elect new mayors and members of municipal councils.

A total of 1,832,415 citizens have the right to vote, of which 1,717,803 voters are located in the country. The voting process will take place in 3,474 active voting centers.

Unclear race in Albanian municipalities

According to analyzes and polls, while the result in most municipalities with a Macedonian majority population is considered largely predictable, the election battle remains open and the result unclear in some of the municipalities where Albanian voters make up the majority.

In these elections, a total of 309 candidates for mayors and 576 lists of councilors compete, with about 10,490 candidates in total. 22 political parties, 19 coalitions and 119 citizen initiatives or independent candidates participate in the race.

The city of Skopje holds the record for the largest number of candidates for mayor, with 16 names.

Key voting figures

The city of Skopje has the largest number of registered voters, with 474,304 eligible citizens. Other municipalities with high numbers of voters include Kumanova (94,041), Tetova (87,878), Gostivar (82,893) and Manastir (77,253).

On the other hand, the municipalities with the fewest voters are: Lozova (1,905), Vevcani (2,092) and Novaci (2,429).

According to the data of the State Electoral Commission (SEC), the largest voting center is located in the Butel neighborhood of Skopje, with a total of 1,432 voters.

It is worth noting that, in addition to the voters on the regular list, 2,162 people who are imprisoned or in custody, as well as 450 voters from old people’s homes, will exercise their right to vote. There will be no organized voting in the diaspora, but citizens abroad can vote if they return to Macedonia during election day.

The local elections of 2025 are the fourth in which mayors and municipal councils are elected simultaneously in all administrative units. Voting will begin tomorrow morning.
