Jahn: The EU’s goals in the automotive industry are not achievable

If, according to Jahn, it is not possible to reassess the goals, car companies will pay fines or buy regulatory credits. The Turk fears that the transformation will lead to the collapse of car companies.

In 2025, the permitted emissions limit for car manufacturers in the EU should be reduced. The Union is also counting on a ban on the sale of cars with internal combustion engines after 2035. But Jahn claims that it will not be possible to meet the set goals for most car companies.

“The increase in interest in electric cars has decreased. In recent years, it rose, it went from 14 to 16 percent, we expected it to be 20 percent in Europe on average this year, but we got back to 14 percent,” said Jahn.

He therefore considers it necessary to reevaluate the goals. “If they fail to reassess, the coming years will be very painful, we will either have to pay fines or buy credits from other car companies,” he added.

Turk expressed a similar opinion. “What is happening between now and 2035 is impossible, and it means either paying about 15 billion euros in fines for the entire automotive industry in Europe, or not producing two to 2.5 million cars, which means losing many jobs. There is talk of closing factories,” he added.

According to Jahn, Škoda can meet its goals either by giving even bigger discounts on electric cars, which would bring the company into deep red, or on the contrary by reducing sales of cars with internal combustion engines, which would also cause a slump.

“In any case, it will negatively threaten us financially, we are at a stage where we need to generate profit to finance the transformation,” said Jahn.
