International Balkan Forum Held

The “International Balkan Forum” was organized under the coordination of the International Civil Society Coordination Association (USKOM) and with the support of the Human Rights and Freedoms (IHH) Humanitarian Aid Foundation.

According to the statement made by IHH, the event held at Fatih Municipality Neslişah Sultan Cultural Center brought together representatives of 21 non-governmental organizations, politicians, academics and Roma MPs from 10 countries in the Balkans.

At the forum, issues such as the problems faced by Roma in the Balkan and European geography and their solution suggestions, possible work to protect cultural heritage, steps that can be taken to protect the rights of Roma and the development of cooperation projects in the fields of education, culture, art and politics were discussed.

In his speech at the forum, USKOM President Yusuf Ziya Dönmez noted that the event offers an important opportunity to make the voices of Romani communities heard and address the challenges they face.

Dönmez said, “The richness of Romani culture has the power to shape not only the past but also the future of the lands they live in. The voices of each of us, combined with solidarity and love, will create a change. I hope this forum will be a turning point in raising the voices of Roma people and defending their rights.” he said.

IHH Board of Trustees Member Osman Atalay stated that the solution to the social and cultural problems of Romani citizens in many Balkan countries is progressing slowly.

Pointing out that the Roma community, which has a valuable potential with its 11 million young and energetic population in Europe and the Balkans, faces discrimination problems in politics, education, housing, health and employment, and in all areas of social life, Atalay said, “Non-governmental institutions should remember the forgotten Roma community in their humanitarian aid policies.” “A very important human rights and moral responsibility is required.” made his assessment.

At the end of the program, gifts were presented to the participants.
