In the end, after all. Trump received Zelensky in his New York skyscraper

Trump said after Friday’s meeting with Zelensky that, if he comes back to power, he will want to resolve the war in Ukraine with a “fair deal for everyone.” “This war should never have happened, but we will solve it,” Trump said, according to AFP.

Even before the meeting, Trump said that he was honored that Zelenskyj came to Trump Tower. “He’s going through a tremendous amount of stuff and we’re going to discuss it and see what we can come up with,” he said before the meeting. Zelenskyi said that both of them have a “common opinion that the war in Ukraine must be stopped.”

At the same time, Trump said that he has a very good relationship with Zelensky. “I also have a very good relationship with (Russian) President Putin,” he added. “I think that if we win (the election), we will solve this very quickly,” said Trump, referring to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Zelensky, standing next to Trump, immediately said he hoped he and Trump had a better relationship than the former Republican president has with Putin.

“As you know, President Zelenskyy asked me to meet,” Trump announced just a few hours before the planned meeting, saying that he would meet with the Ukrainian president on Friday around 9:45 a.m. (3:45 p.m. CET). For a long time it was not clear whether the meeting would take place. The AP and Reuters agencies, citing their sources, claimed on Thursday that no such meeting was planned, although Kyiv had announced it before Zelensky’s departure to the US.

In addition, Trump has repeatedly leaned on the Ukrainian president this week. “Every time he came to our country, he left with 60 billion dollars. He is probably the best businessman in the world,” said the former president, among other things.

Ex-president: Any agreement will be better

“The president of Ukraine is in our country. They’re spreading nasty little rumors about your favorite president, me,” Trump said this week, according to The Washington Post. “We continue to give billions of dollars to the man who refuses to make a deal: Zelensky,” added the Republican.

Perhaps he was reacting to the interview that Zelenskyy gave to the New Yorker. In it, he questioned Trump’s plan to end Ukraine’s war with Russia and criticized Trump’s vice presidential nominee JD Vance, whom he called “too radical.”

The Republican ex-president has previously claimed that he himself would end the war “within 24 hours”, without giving details. “Any deal, even the worst, will be better than what we have now,” he said this week. “What is happening in Ukraine is terrible. So much death, so much destruction. It’s a terrible thing,” he added, adding that he thought he would be able to broker an agreement between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin “quite quickly.”

Trump and Zelensky last spoke by phone in July this year. “We agreed with President Trump that during a personal meeting we will discuss what steps can ensure a just and truly lasting peace,” the Ukrainian president said at the time.

Zelenskyj, who came to the US to present his “victory plan”, has already met with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, who is Trump’s opponent in this year’s elections. On Thursday, the White House announced additional military aid to Kyiv in the amount of almost eight billion dollars (180 billion CZK). But he did not get the desired approval to use Western weapons against targets deep in Russian territory.

In an obvious allusion to Trump, Harris described as “unacceptable and dangerous” proposals for Ukraine to give up a large part of its territory. Zelenskyj also met with representatives of the Congress in the USA, and spoke at the General Assembly and the UN Security Council.
