The women who were cutting into a wooden statue in a joint protest wore ribbons in the color of the Ukrainian flag on their suspenders and shouted slogans like “Keep Russia out of the UN” or “Fuck Russia”. The same slogans directed against the United Nations and Russia were also written on their half-naked bodies. On their backs, the women had the inscription “Stop mines!”, calling for a stop to the use of mines.
Activists who left dozens of cut holes on the statue were arrested for vandalism. With them were two other colleagues from the same protest group who were also there. According to Reuters, a spokesman for the Swiss police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, but did not provide any details. The women refused to talk to journalists.
The monument that the women vandalized is known as the Broken Chair. It was created with the aim of raising awareness of the impact of landmines on civilians in conflict zones. The three-legged structure, which was created in 1997, is the work of the Swiss artist Daniel Berset and is one of the most famous sculptures in Geneva.
