“History plays a very special role in the relations between Germany and the Czech Republic. Therefore, we will not interfere in the domestic Czech debate on whether Brno is suitable as a venue,” the ministry said. “One thing is clear: the Sudeten German Congress advocates reconciliation, which is the basis of German-Czech relations,” Berlin added.
The Ministry also emphasized that the Czech Republic is an important EU partner and neighbor for Germany, with which it wants to continue to have the closest possible political, economic and civil society relations.
The Sudeten German congress will take place from May 22 to 25 in Brno, for the first time in the Czech Republic, as part of the Meeting Brno festival.
The government coalition of ANO, SPD and Motorists proposed a resolution to the Chamber of Deputies in which they want it to disagree with the organization of a congress of Sudeten Germans in the Czech Republic. In addition, according to the proposal, the lower chamber of the Czech parliament should call on the organizers to abandon the event. After the adjournment, the resolution will be discussed again on Thursday.
The organizers have already stated that the convention will take place regardless of how the deputies vote.
German Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt and Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder have promised to attend the event. He will then head to Prague for a meeting with President Petr Pavlo.
