“The challenge revealed the long-standing tragedy of one married couple. The forty-nine-year-old woman was unable to present all her weapons for inspection. When explaining, she stated that her husband made it impossible for her, and at the same time she talked about the horrors that accompanied their more than 25 years of cohabitation,” said Veronika Hyšplerová, spokeswoman for the Police of the Czech Republic in the Ústecké Region.
A seventy-three-year-old man tortured two girlfriends for several years. In addition to the fact that he humiliated her in every way, threatened her, forbade her access to her bank account. He also installed a tracking device in her car and even repeatedly scalded her with boiling water, causing her serious injuries. In several cases, he pointed a firearm at her and threatened her with death. His actions led her to psychological problems, which she solved with alcohol, and after some time she also sought professional help and had to take antidepressants.
“On the basis of the initiative of criminalists, the public prosecutor issued a preliminary consent to the arrest of the suspect, as well as the District Court in Děčín issued a warrant for a house search. Based on the information, the criminal investigators evaluated the man’s behavior as unpredictable and dangerous, especially given his tendencies towards aggression and drunkenness,” Hyšplerová described.
During a search of the couple’s house in Rumburk, the police found 14 firearms and 6,000 rounds of ammunition without the relevant permits. These were mainly shotguns, revolvers, submachine guns, but among the weapons there was also a submachine gun. The man lost his gun license in the past, subsequently transferred the weapons to his wife and continued to keep them illegally.

“All found weapons and ammunition were secured by the police and taken to expert examination. The police investigator subsequently initiated criminal proceedings against the 73-year-old man on suspicion of committing the crime of abusing a person living in a shared dwelling and the crime of illegal weaponry,” the spokeswoman added, adding that the investigation continues and further details will be known after expert examinations of the seized weapons and ammunition.
If the accused is proven guilty before the court, he faces a prison sentence ranging from 2 to 8 years.
In connection with the case, the policewoman emphasizes the necessity of preventing domestic violence.
“If the victim does not find the strength to solve the situation by himself, it is necessary that relatives, acquaintances or institutions that know about the problem intervene. Anyone who has information about violence can file a complaint so that further harm can be prevented. We should never underestimate situations that may seem insignificant at first glance. Help can save a life,” concluded Hyšplerová.
