Bebe Rexha supports Albanian students in Skopje: Our language is our identity

The world-famous Albanian singer, Bebe Rexha, has publicly expressed her support for the Albanian students in Skopje, who are protesting against the ban on taking the bar exam in the Albanian language.

In a post on Instagram, Rexha emphasized the importance of the Albanian language as part of the national identity and the values of coexistence in North Macedonia, where Albanian is an official language alongside Macedonian.

Our Albanian language is deeply rooted in our identity. For generations we have fought to preserve it and keep it alive,” she wrote, adding that Albanian students deserve the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

In another message, Rexha underlined that “North Macedonia is a multi-ethnic state built on coexistence and equal rights for all its communities, where Albanian is recognized as a co-official language. Students are protesting against the ban on giving the jurisprudence exam in Albanian this Monday. Albanian students deserve the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.”

The protest is expected to take place on Monday, while Bebe Rexha’s message has increased international attention to the issue of the use of the Albanian language in the state institutions of North Macedonia.

Albanian students have warned of a new protest that will be held tomorrow, May 18, 2026, at 4:30 p.m., in front of the Stone Bridge in Skopje, demanding that the jurisprudence exam be made possible in the Albanian language. The protest is organized with the motto “Join the students – all one voice”, while the main message is the protection of the right to use the Albanian language in professional exams.
